Hormone Testing
It is important to recognize symptoms associated with hormone imbalances. It is also important to test your hormone levels to determine what hormones need to be replaced to reduce symptoms associated with hormone imbalances.

Sliva TestBoth blood levels and salivary hormone levels have been used to assess a patient’s hormonal status. These levels represent a moment in time for hormones that are constantly fluctuating. It is very important for women who are still having menstrual cycles to test in the luteal phase of their cycle (usually cycle days 19, 20 or 21). Women who are menopausal can test hormone levels any time. It is beneficial to get a baseline level before beginning therapy.

Common hormones tested to determine the need for hormone replacement therapy:
  • Estradiol
  • Progesterone
  • DHEA-S
  • Testosterone
  • FSH
These hormones listed can be tested through saliva or blood tests, with the exception of FSH, which can only be attained through blood testing.

Facts about Salivary Hormone Testing
  • Salivary hormone levels reflect the tissue uptake of hormones delivered through the skin (topical creams, gels or patches)
  • Salivary hormone testing is convenient and lower cost than most blood tests.
  • Salivary collection is painless.
  • A salivary collection can be stored a room temperature without loss of activity.
